New Bike Lane Approved, Overriding Cycle Group’s Design Concerns

On May 21, a significant decision regarding a new bike lane in Kidlington was made by Neil Fawcett, acting on behalf of newly elected county council leader Tim Bearder. This new infrastructure project aims to enhance safety and accessibility for both cyclists and pedestrians along Bicester Road.
Details of the New Bike Lane
The proposed shared-use pavement and cycleway will include essential features such as bus stops, a toucan crossing, and a puffin crossing. These additions are aimed at providing better access to upcoming developments along the route.
Community Reactions
Local cycling groups have expressed mixed opinions on the design. The Bicester Bike Users’ Group raised concerns, stating that shared paths do not adequately serve either pedestrians or cyclists. They criticized the plan for its perceived inadequate policy compliance and poor design.
Conversely, Cyclox, another cycling advocacy group, supported the project. They emphasized the benefits of a signal-controlled toucan crossing and a wider footway and cycleway, which they believe will improve safety and crossing opportunities. However, they also suggested that further refinements could align the design with current best practices.
Oxfordshire Liveable Streets provided a cautious assessment, noting various concerns with the proposal. Fawcett acknowledged the criticisms but maintained that the scheme met the necessary standards, considering existing funding and development agreements.
Funding and Development Agreements
The new bike path will be financed through a Section 106 agreement with developers constructing nearby. This funding model is intended to ensure that essential community infrastructure accompanies new developments.
Resident Perspectives
Community feedback has been varied. One local resident expressed support for the new toucan crossing, citing safety issues with existing zebra crossings. They noted frequent disregard by drivers, resulting in dangerous situations for pedestrians, particularly children.
- A Bicester Road driver reported near misses involving adults and children.
- Another resident commented positively on the plans, highlighting the dangers of cycling on the parallel Oxford Road due to numerous potholes.
- Some concerns were raised about the condition of another shared-use path nearby, which is reportedly in poor shape.
As discussions around the new bike lane continue, it’s clear that while some see it as a vital improvement, others remain critical of its design and potential impact on safety.
