Fernando Alonso Details Crash During Canadian GP Sprint Qualifying

Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso experienced a setback during the qualifying session for the Canadian Grand Prix sprint race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The Spanish driver crashed while attempting to navigate Turn 3, resulting in his retirement from the session.

Crash Details and Impact

With just 1 minute and 46 seconds remaining in SQ1, Alonso suffered a lock-up as he approached the turn. This miscalculation led to a direct impact with the wall after missing the escape road. Over the team radio, Alonso expressed regret, saying, “Yeah sorry, lock-up mate.”

At the moment of the incident, Alonso had recorded the 14th-fastest time. This placed him at risk of elimination, especially considering that other drivers had limited time left to improve their lap times.

Alonso’s Reflections

Post-crash, Alonso spoke to Sky Sports F1, acknowledging, “I locked up the front and there is no room to avoid anything here in Canada. Too much on the limit.” He further noted the team’s struggle with pace, implying they were “pushing seven or eight places more than we should have.”

Current Standings and Team Challenges

The series’ evolving track conditions added to the pressure. Former F1 driver Martin Brundle highlighted that teams were eager to maximize their available time. He stated, “We have 106 seconds available, and they need to get out of the pitlane and up to speed.”

  • Alonso currently sits 21st in the drivers’ standings without any points this season.
  • Other drivers facing elimination during the session included Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly, and Valtteri Bottas.
  • Alex Albon and Liam Lawson were already out after not participating in the qualifying session.

This has been a challenging start for Aston Martin in the 2026 season. Following a new power unit partnership with Honda and the debut of a car designed under Adrian Newey’s leadership, expectations were initially high. However, both Alonso and teammate Stroll have encountered numerous difficulties on the track.
