Pelicans Dismiss Coach Green Amid 2-10 Struggle

The New Orleans Pelicans have made a significant coaching change early in the season. Following a disappointing start of 2-10, the team has terminated head coach Willie Green’s contract. This decision comes after a tough opening that saw the Pelicans lose six consecutive games, compounded by injuries to key players.
Pelecans’ Struggles and Coaching Change
Zion Williamson, the team’s star forward, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, restricting him to just five games this season. This marks the fourth year in a row that Williamson has struggled with this specific ailment. The team’s performance has been historically poor. They became the first in NBA history to lose three of their first six games by a margin of at least 30 points. Additionally, the Pelicans allowed over 120 points in five consecutive games, setting a record for the franchise.
Recent Performance
- The Pelicans are currently on a four-game losing streak.
- Their most recent loss was a 118-104 defeat against the Los Angeles Lakers.
With Willie Green at the helm for five seasons, he concludes his tenure with a record of 150 wins and 190 losses. During his coaching career, the Pelicans made the postseason in both the 2021-22 and 2023-24 seasons.
Interim Coaching Changes
James Borrego, an assistant coach previously with the Charlotte Hornets, has been appointed as the interim coach for the Pelicans. Borrego was a candidate for head coaching positions with the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers in 2024. Despite options to join other teams as a lead assistant, he chose to remain in New Orleans.
The Pelicans now look to regroup and improve under Borrego’s leadership as the season progresses. The transition comes at a critical time for the franchise, aiming to salvage their season and overcome early obstacles.
