STM Driver Strike Canceled: Metro and Buses Operating This Weekend

Public transportation services in Montreal, including metro and buses, will operate during the weekend, as planned. The strike by drivers and operators was canceled just hours before it was set to begin. This decision came after the union reached a preliminary agreement with the Société de transport de Montréal (STM).
Negotiations Lead to Agreement
Intensive negotiations resumed on Friday after a brief pause. The discussions involved approximately 4,500 drivers, metro operators, station agents, and adapted transportation staff. Marie-Claude Léonard, the STM’s General Director, confirmed that a principle agreement was reached that included compromises from both sides.
The details of the agreement will remain confidential until approved by the STM board and union members. Frédéric Therrien, the union president, emphasized the importance of a negotiated settlement and affirmed that members would have their say through democratic processes.
Context of the Strike and Previous Actions
This strike cancellation helps avoid further disruptions. Just days earlier, on November 1, a one-day strike had already paralyzed local transit services, marking the first bus driver strike in nearly 40 years.
- Previous strike: One-day strike on November 1, 2023
- First bus driver strike: Last occurred in 1987
- Potential strike impact: 1.15 million trips recorded on average weekends in Montreal
Public and Political Reactions
Montreal’s new mayor, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, praised the agreement, commending the effective negotiations by the union and the STM. Meanwhile, Labor Minister Jean Boulet recognized both parties’ efforts on social media.
Future Negotiations and Ongoing Conflicts
While a resolution was reached for the STM drivers, other negotiations continue. Three unions, representing maintenance employees, administrative staff, and professionals, are still seeking agreements. These unions have mandates for potential strikes, but maintenance staff abandoned their planned strike amid legislative pressure. Meanwhile, administrative staff are expected to strike on Wednesday if no agreement is reached.
The situation remains dynamic, but there are currently no anticipated impacts on transit users due to these additional negotiations.
