Weekly Gear Update: Steam’s Home Console Launch and Apple’s $230 iPhone Pouch Debut

Major advancements in technology were unveiled this week, with Valve and Apple stepping into the spotlight. The gaming industry saw the return of Valve to hardware with the introduction of its new home console, the Steam Machine. Meanwhile, Apple launched an innovative $230 iPhone pouch, marking a significant collaboration with renowned design brand Issey Miyake.

Valve’s New Hardware: The Steam Machine

Valve has re-entered the PC hardware market with the Steam Machine. This device signifies a revival of the original Steam Machine concept, which struggled nearly a decade ago. Built on the success of the Steam Deck, the new Steam Machine promises to be significantly more powerful, boasting six times the performance of its predecessor.

Specifications and Design

Though specific measurements are yet to be confirmed, early reports suggest the Steam Machine resembles the size of the Nintendo GameCube. It utilizes a custom AMD Zen 4 CPU and will be offered in various memory and storage options, all of which are user-upgradable.

Steam Controller and Steam Frame

The Steam Machine will be complemented by the Steam Controller. This new controller features dual haptic-feedback trackpads alongside standard thumbsticks, buttons, triggers, and bumpers.

Additionally, Valve introduced the Steam Frame, a long-awaited virtual reality headset intended for seamless PC connectivity. This headset will alleviate latency issues through a dedicated wireless module. It can also function as a standalone device, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. The headset weighs only 440 grams, making it lighter than competitors like the Meta Quest 3S.

  • Resolution: 2160 x 2160 pixels per eye
  • Weight: 440 grams
  • Expected shipping date: Early 2026

Apple’s Innovative Pouch for the iPhone

In a separate announcement, Apple debuted the iPhone Pocket, a stylish shoulder bag specifically designed for its iPhone models. This pouch is the result of a collaboration with Issey Miyake and is inspired by a simple cloth design created through a unique 3D-knitting process in Japan.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone Pocket comes in two styles: a short-strap version priced at $150 and a long-strap variant costing $230. Both options are available in various colors but are only sold at select Apple Store locations and online in specific countries, including France, China, and the US.

Digital Enhancements and Samsung’s Portable Monitors

Apple also launched a new Digital ID feature for Apple Wallet, enabling users to store passport information seamlessly for domestic travel. This feature is currently in beta across more than 250 U.S. airports but does not replace the traditional passport for international journeys.

On a different front, Samsung introduced its Movingstyle monitors, designed for portability throughout your home or office. These monitors, available in 27- or 32-inch sizes, include a rollable stand with wheels for easy transport, perfect for multitasking and convenience.

  • Models: Movingstyle (LSM7F) and Movingstyle M7 Smart Monitor (M70F)
  • Available sizes: 27 inches and 32 inches

As the tech landscape evolves, both Valve and Apple are setting new standards in their respective fields, demonstrating innovation and collaboration.
