Toxin Ricin Materials Discovered in Hyderabad Doctor’s Home

A Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) operation in Hyderabad uncovered alarming materials related to the production of ricin, a potent biological toxin. This raid occurred on Wednesday morning at the residence of Dr. Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyyad, who has been arrested along with two others.
Key Details from the Hyderabad Raid
The operation involved 10 to 12 ATS personnel and resulted in the confiscation of several crucial items. Among the materials seized were:
- 3 kg of castor pulp, the primary source for ricin
- 5 liters of acetone, a solvent essential for extraction
- A cold press oil extraction machine
- A mixing tub for castor pulp and acetone
- A receipt confirming delivery of the acetone
Reportedly, Dr. Ahmed’s brother, Omer Farooq, indicated that these materials were deemed “incriminating” by the authorities. Omer Farooq, who is training to be a Muslim cleric, stated: “My brother was given a project by someone,” suggesting a lack of malicious intent.
Understanding Ricin and Its Risks
Ricin is a highly toxic protein that occurs naturally and can be lethal through inhalation, injection, or ingestion. It poses a significant biological threat due to its extreme potency. Made from castor pulp, ricin can be converted into various forms, including powder, aerosol, or pellet. This versatility enhances its potential as a biological weapon.
Implications of the Discovery
The Gujarat ATS suspects that the individuals arrested are involved in planning to use ricin as a biological weapon. The presence of precursor materials like castor pulp and extraction equipment strongly indicates an attempt to manufacture this dangerous toxin.
Dr. Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyyad is a medical graduate who completed his education in China. The findings and ongoing investigation reveal a troubling scenario regarding the misuse of biological materials in Hyderabad.
