Antifa Ost and Three Other Violent Groups Designated Antifa

The U.S. Department of State has officially designated four groups as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) and plans to label them as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) starting November 20, 2025. This designation includes Antifa Ost, the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front, Armed Proletarian Justice, and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense.

Overview of Designated Groups

  • Antifa Ost: Also referred to as Antifa East or Hammerbande, this militant group is based in Germany. It has been involved in numerous violent incidents aimed at individuals labeled as “fascists” or associated with the right-wing scene. Notably, the group is accused of attacks in Budapest in February 2023. On September 26, 2025, Hungary categorized Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization.
  • Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front (FAI/FRI): This anarchist group operates mostly in Italy but has claimed connections across Europe, South America, and Asia. FAI/FRI openly supports revolutionary armed struggle against nation-states and has been responsible for various acts of violence, including bomb threats against political institutions since 2003.
  • Armed Proletarian Justice: Based in Greece, this anarchist group has carried out improvised explosive device (IED) attacks targeting government officials. They claimed responsibility for a bombing near the Greek riot police headquarters on December 18, 2023.
  • Revolutionary Class Self-Defense: Also operating in Greece, this anti-capitalist group links its violent acts to larger political struggles, particularly opposition to capitalist structures and state repression. They have executed IED attacks against the Greek Ministry of Labor and the Hellenic Train offices in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Impact of Terrorist Designations

These designations serve to expose and isolate the groups involved. By doing so, the U.S. restricts their access to financial resources and support systems necessary for perpetuating violence. All properties belonging to designated individuals or groups within U.S. jurisdiction are blocked. Additionally, U.S. citizens are prohibited from engaging in any business interactions with these organizations, which could expose them to severe sanctions.

Legal Framework for Designation

This action follows the guidelines outlined in Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224. The official designations will take effect upon publication in the Federal Register. Those seeking removal from the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List can refer to the Department of State’s Delisting Guidance.
