Costa Rica is making history by pursuing nominations for both the Best International Feature and Best Documentary categories at the upcoming Oscars. This marks the first time the country has made such submissions.

Recently, Costa Rica selected “The Altar Boy, The Priest, and the Gardener,” directed by Juan Manuel Fernández, as its official entry for Best International Feature. Additionally, the Trade and Investment Promotion Agency of Costa Rica announced that the film will also be submitted for Best Documentary.

The documentary focuses on Anthony Venegas Abarca, who publicly accused ex-priest Mauricio Víquez Lizano of child sexual abuse in 2018. This brave act initiated a case that resulted in Lizano receiving a groundbreaking 20-year prison sentence.
