Pinellas County Welcomes Division One College Basketball After 20 Years

For the first time in over two decades, Pinellas County, Florida, is hosting Division One men’s college basketball. This major event marks the return of the sport to the area, featuring the Showdown in St. Pete at Eckerd College.

Return of Division One Basketball to Pinellas County

The Showdown in St. Pete takes place from Thursday through Saturday this week. Although Division One basketball last graced the county in 1999, local fans are excited about the return.

Event Location and Teams

Initially planned for Tropicana Field, the tournament shifted to Eckerd College after the venue suffered damage during last year’s hurricane season. Participating teams include:

  • Central Michigan
  • Coppin State
  • South Alabama

Nima Omidvar, the event director, expressed enthusiasm about the basketball return, stating, “This is really surreal.” He has dedicated years to reviving Division One basketball in the region.

Future Aspirations

Omidvar envisions long-term growth for the event at Eckerd College. He hopes it can expand to include more prominent programs, recreating the excitement of Final Four experiences similar to those in 1999.

Economic Impact

The tournament not only promises thrilling basketball but also significant economic benefits for the area. Omidvar noted that just the presence of these three teams could generate approximately $300,000 for the local economy.

Basketball analyst Rocco Miller highlighted the potential for future growth, stating that next year could see the participation of at least six teams. He emphasized the importance of helping the community engage with Division One basketball.

Conclusion: A New Era for Pinellas County Basketball

The Showdown in St. Pete represents a pivotal moment for basketball fans and the local community. With aspirations to eventually return to Tropicana Field, this event could elevate Pinellas County back into the national college basketball spotlight.
