Apple Launches Digital ID for Seamless Wallet Integration

Apple has officially launched its new Digital ID feature, providing users an innovative way to create and present their identification through Apple Wallet. This enhancement allows customers to use information from their U.S. passports securely with their iPhones or Apple Watches.

Digital ID Launch Details

Announced on November 12, 2025, Digital ID will initially be available in a beta format at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 U.S. airports. This feature is designed for in-person identity verification for domestic travel, with future applications expected to follow.

Key Features of Digital ID

  • Secure storage of user identification
  • Utilizes information from U.S. passports
  • Not a substitute for physical passports; cannot be used internationally

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, expressed enthusiasm about expanding identity storage options for users. She emphasized the importance of security and privacy, highlighting the success of previous features that allowed adding driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet.

Creating Digital ID

Users with a U.S. passport can easily create their Digital ID through a series of straightforward steps:

  1. Open Apple Wallet and tap the Add (+) button.
  2. Select “Driver’s License or ID Cards,” followed by “Digital ID.”
  3. Follow on-screen instructions to scan the passport photo page.
  4. Read the chip on the passport for data verification.
  5. Take a selfie and perform facial movements for additional security.

Presenting Digital ID

To present a Digital ID, users can double-click the side button or Home button to access Apple Wallet. They simply need to select Digital ID and position their device near an identity reader. Biometric authentication via Face ID or Touch ID ensures only the rightful owner can present their ID.

Safety and Privacy Measures

Digital ID incorporates robust security features built into Apple devices. The data is encrypted, and users’ passport information remains stored securely on their devices. Notably, Apple does not track when or where Digital IDs are used, ensuring privacy for users.

Adoption of Digital ID and Wallet Integration

As of now, Apple Wallet supports the addition of driver’s licenses or state IDs in 12 states and Puerto Rico. The feature recently expanded to include more regions, including a launch in Japan for My Number Card on iPhone.
