Cardboard Sumo Wrestling Returns to Tokyo’s Sumida Ward; Workshop Applications Open

The popular “Dondoko! Giant Paper Sumo Wrestling” event is set to take place in Tokyo’s Sumida Ward. This annual highlighting of creativity and community spirit will occur on December 21, 2025, at the Hikifune Culture Center.
Event Overview
The unique event features 1.8-meter-tall sumo wrestlers crafted from cardboard. It marks the seventh iteration of this exciting tournament, which started in 2019. Each year, families come together to design their own paper sumo wrestlers.
Workshop Details
In preparation for the tournament, sumo wrestler-making workshops are scheduled. These workshops will happen at four different locations within the ward on:
- November 29
- November 30
- December 6
- December 7
Each day, there will be two workshops available. Groups of 3 to 8 individuals can apply, with a deadline set 10 days prior to each workshop date. If the response exceeds available spots, participants will be chosen through a lottery system.
Tournament Highlights
A total of 32 paper sumo wrestlers will compete in the tournament. Participants will engage in traditional bouts on a wooden dohyo. The event promises an engaging experience for all, with a “wrestler directory” and popularity polls available on the tournament’s website.
