Eddie Murphy Plans to Ease Funeral Burden on Loved Ones After His Death

Eddie Murphy has opened up about his unconventional views on funerals in a recent interview, presenting his plan for after his death. This discussion coincides with the release of his Netflix documentary, “Being Eddie,” which is set to premiere on November 12.

Eddie Murphy’s Unique Perspective on Funerals

In the interview with USA TODAY, Murphy reveals that although he has funded many funerals for friends, he avoids attending them. He has only been to two funerals in his 64 years: those of his biological father, Charles Edward Murphy, and his stepfather, Vernon Lynch. Murphy describes funerals as overly morbid events, stating, “The whole emotional ritual is too much.”

Financing Funerals for Friends

The actor, known for his work in “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Shrek,” has paid for funerals of late friends, including:

  • Redd Foxx, his co-star in “Harlem Nights”
  • Rick James, with whom he collaborated on the iconic 1985 song “Party All the Time”
  • William “Billie” Thomas Jr., known for his role as Buckwheat
  • Tim Moore, who played Kingfish on “Amos ‘n Andy”

Plans for His Own Death

When discussing his own death, Murphy makes it clear that he prefers a stark departure from traditional funeral customs. He states, “When I kick out, I’m not having no funeral… Just keep it rolling. None of that trauma.” Instead of a funeral, Murphy has opted for immediate cremation. He expresses no concern regarding what happens to his remains, humorously asserting, “I don’t give a f— what they do with them.”

Reflecting on Life and Legacy

The documentary “Being Eddie” provides insights into Murphy’s life, including his rise in the entertainment industry. The film features interviews with notable figures like Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, and Chris Rock. Murphy reflects on his relationships, particularly with his late brother, Charlie Murphy, who died from leukemia in 2017 at age 57. This connection remains a significant part of his emotional journey.

Best known for his dynamic presence, Eddie Murphy emphasizes that his role as a father to ten children is his most important legacy. He asserts, “That’s my greatest accomplishment, and my world revolves around them.”

With a career that spans decades, Murphy continues to impact the entertainment industry. As his documentary prepares to launch, he focuses on the present and remains committed to his family and creative endeavors.
