Swansea City to Release Head Coach Alan Sheehan

Swansea City is set to part ways with head coach Alan Sheehan following a series of disappointing results. Sheehan, who initially joined the club as an assistant to Michael Duff in the summer of 2023, briefly took over as interim head coach in December after Duff’s departure. His early tenure saw the team secure 11 points from 21 available.

Sheehan’s Uneven Tenure

After Michael Duff’s successor, Luke Williams, was appointed in January 2024, Sheehan returned to a temporary role following Williams’ dismissal. During his second interim period, Sheehan led Swansea to a notable improvement, earning 24 points from 13 matches. This resulted in an 11th-place finish for the club, especially impressive considering they had been battling relegation just months earlier.

New Ownership and Transfer Activity

With a three-year contract as head coach secured, Sheehan was supported heavily in the summer transfer market. Under the new ownership group headed by Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen, Swansea City aimed to bolster the squad to enhance their chances of a top-flight return.

  • Key signings included:
    • Adam Idah
    • Marko Stamenic
    • Zeidane Inoussa
    • Ethan Galbraith

Despite these investments, Swansea has struggled to translate early season promise into effective results. Under Sheehan’s command, the team recorded the lowest expected goals (xG) in the division, standing at 12.48. Additionally, they created just 15 big chances, the fewest among all second-tier teams.

Fan Discontent and Upcoming Challenges

Recent performances have led to growing frustration among fans. During the last match against Ipswich, supporters expressed their dissatisfaction with chants calling for Sheehan’s exit at both half-time and full-time. This marks a challenging period, with the team achieving only one win in the last eight matches across all competitions.

With the final international break of the year approaching, fans are hopeful that a managerial change can help revitalize the team’s ambitions for a top-six finish. Swansea City is set to resume league action against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday, 22 November at 12:30 GMT.
