Syria Joins Coalition to Defeat IS Following Trump Meeting

The recent meeting between President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa signifies a pivotal change in U.S. foreign policy towards Syria. This historic visit marks the first time a Syrian leader has visited the White House, signaling a potential collaboration in combatting the Islamic State (IS) group.

Syria Joins Coalition to Defeat IS

According to a senior official in the Trump administration, Syria will become the 90th country to join the international coalition against IS. President Trump welcomed this development, emphasizing that it represents a new era for Syria. During an interview with Fox News, al-Sharaa expressed optimism about forging a partnership with the United States.

New Economic Measures Announced

In conjunction with Syria’s participation in the coalition, the U.S. government plans to lift certain economic restrictions on Syria. This includes:

  • Issuing compliance clarity for investors.
  • Announcing an 180-day suspension of the Caesar Act, which imposed sanctions since 2019.

These measures are aimed at promoting reconstruction and stability in Syria after thirteen years of war.

Diplomatic Relations and Background

Diplomatic ties between Syria and the U.S. have been severed since 2012. However, in a significant shift, the U.S. will now permit Syria to re-open its embassy in Washington. This meeting was not the first; al-Sharaa and Trump have met previously during the Gulf Cooperation Council in May and a dinner at the UN General Assembly in September.

Al-Sharaa’s journey to this point has been noteworthy. Previously the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an armed group once classified as a terrorist organization by the U.S., he was recently removed from the Treasury Department’s terrorist list. His efforts to rebrand and lead Syria towards recovery have garnered attention.

Looking Ahead

President Trump has expressed strong support for al-Sharaa, stating, “We want to see Syria become a country that’s very successful.” He has indicated that he believes in al-Sharaa’s potential for achieving this goal. During their discussions, the focus remained on Syria’s current situation and its future as a geopolitical partner.

As Syria joins the coalition against IS, the international community will be watching closely. The effectiveness of al-Sharaa’s leadership and the role of the U.S. in supporting Syria’s recovery will be critical in the months to come.
