According to the Garner Police Department, the suspect, identified as Benji Martin Jr., age 29, was also shot during the altercation and is currently in custody under medical supervision.

Garner Police have charged Martin with murder following the shooting that claimed the life of Officer Roger Smith. Smith, 59, was on duty in the hospital’s lobby when he was shot. Despite immediate medical assistance, he succumbed to his injuries on-site.
