Maryland Gov. Moore Rejects Trump’s Influence on Redistricting Action

Maryland Governor Wes Moore recently announced the formation of a redistricting committee aimed at evaluating potential mid-decade redistricting strategies. This initiative is a direct response to similar redistricting efforts seen in several Republican-led states, including Texas and Florida.
Governor Moore’s Stance on Redistricting
During an appearance on “Face the Nation,” Governor Moore emphasized the importance of actively participating in the redistricting process. He questioned why Maryland should adhere to different rules than states like Texas or Florida. “We’re not going to sit on our hands because Donald Trump tells us to,” Moore stated.
Background on Redistricting in Maryland
Currently, eight of Maryland’s nine congressional seats are held by Democrats. This political landscape favors the Democrats significantly, with the state having gone to former Vice President Kamala Harris by over 28 points in the 2024 election. The redistricting plan aims to address the lone Republican-held seat situated in the eastern region of Maryland.
Composition of the Redistricting Committee
The commission responsible for exploring these redistricting options is led by U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks, a close ally of Governor Moore. The committee also includes:
- Senate President Bill Ferguson
- Maryland House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones
- Former Attorney General Brian Frosh
- Cumberland Mayor Raymond Morriss
Legal and Political Challenges
According to Maryland law, congressional maps must be drawn by the state Assembly, where Democrats hold a supermajority. The Governor would need to convene a special session to advance any redistricting measures. However, Senate President Ferguson has expressed concerns regarding the legal implications of mid-cycle redistricting. He warned that such actions could present substantial risks and undermine the stability of Maryland’s current congressional map.
Democratic Strategy Moving Forward
Despite pushback from Ferguson, Governor Moore remains resolute about the necessity of this redistricting initiative. He believes that “fighting for democracy is never risky” and acknowledges a shared concern over the challenges posed by former President Trump. The Governor underlined the urgency of the situation and the need for Maryland to take proactive measures to secure its democratic processes.
As the redistricting discussion progresses, it remains to be seen how the committee will navigate internal dissent and legal hurdles to potentially reshape Maryland’s political landscape.
