Suspect Detained Following Shooting at WakeMed Garner Healthplex

Authorities are investigating a tragic shooting incident that occurred at WakeMed Garner Healthplex on Saturday morning. A police officer was shot while performing his duties in the hospital’s emergency department lobby.

At approximately 9 a.m., Garner police responded to reports of a shooting involving a WakeMed police officer. Officer Roger Smith, 59, was engaged in a struggle when he was fatally shot.
