Canadian travelers heading to Europe will soon encounter stricter border security measures. European authorities are initiating a new border management system that requires more detailed information from visitors. This system will necessitate the electronic travel authorizations for tourists starting late next year.
New Border Management System
The Entry/Exit System is the first major initiative aimed at modernizing border management across 29 European countries. It is scheduled to be fully operational by April 10.
- Applies to short-stay visa holders and travelers from countries like Canada.
- Enables stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
- Collects biometric data, such as facial images and fingerprints.
This data will assist in monitoring compliance with permitted stays and bolster efforts against organized crime and terrorism.
Motivation Behind the System
The need for a centralized approach comes after years of inconsistent border management. Uku Sarekanno, deputy executive director of Frontex, highlighted the importance of addressing irregular migration, which is currently a significant political concern in Europe.
European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)
Beginning late next year, visitors from visa-exempt nations, including Canadians, will need to obtain the ETIAS travel authorization. This will be a crucial entry prerequisite for traveling to any of the 30 participating European countries.
- ETIAS will be available for 20 euros through an online platform.
- Applicants under 18 and over 70 will be exempt from this fee.
Most applications will be processed rapidly, often within minutes, allowing border officers to better manage incoming risks. It’s important to note that while ETIAS authorizes entry, it does not guarantee it. Travelers must still present their passport and other documentation at the border.

Travelers are encouraged to apply for their ETIAS authorization before finalizing flight or accommodation bookings. Awareness of potential online scams related to ETIAS is crucial, as there are already fraudulent attempts exploiting this upcoming measure.
