Judy Russ Honors Late Husband by Donating Rockefeller Christmas Tree

This year, the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a special tribute, donated by Judy Russ in memory of her late husband, Dan. The magnificent Norway spruce, which stands 74 feet and 11 inches tall, originated from the family’s Rensselaer County farmland. This heartfelt gesture honors a shared dream and continues a family legacy.

Judy Russ and the Christmas Tree Donation

In 2020, Judy’s husband, Dan, passed away at the young age of 32. Before his untimely death, he had always hoped their spruce would be chosen as the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Judy expressed her sentiment, saying, “As my husband has passed away, I know he would have loved to have been here for this moment.”

A Family Legacy

The Norway spruce was planted by Dan’s great-grandparents approximately 75 years ago. Judy and her son, Liam, cherished this tree, which Liam often used as a playground. Judy took the initiative to apply for the tree’s selection in July. She used family connections to ensure a photograph of the tree reached Erik Pauze, the head gardener at Rockefeller Center.

The Selection Process

  • The tree was inspected at the family farm.
  • Erik Pauze declared it a perfect choice after just one visit.
  • The tree was cut down on November 10.

Judy reflected on the experience with bittersweet emotions. The tree’s arrival at Rockefeller Center is anticipated on Saturday morning, with the famous lighting ceremony scheduled for December 3. Judy noted, “The 50,000 lights on the tree will shine in the memory of my husband.”

Emotional Impact of the Donation

This year, as the family shares their beloved Norway spruce with the world, Judy hopes it brings joy and cheer to everyone. “Spread joy, spread cheer, love one another. Think of our family, think of my husband,” she emphasized. Her sentiment illustrates the spirit of the season, making this year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree truly special.
