University of Osaka Hosts “Inochi Declaration Festival” at Expo 2025 Kansai

The University of Osaka recently hosted the “Inochi Declaration Festival” at the Osaka-Kansai Expo, on October 11, 2025. This event emphasized the importance of life and aimed to engage the public in meaningful discussions. A total of 370 attendees participated in the festival, contributing to an enriching atmosphere of shared thoughts and reflections on life.

About the Inochi Declaration

The “Inochi Declaration” is a significant intangible legacy project initiated by the University of Osaka and three prominent Kansai economic organizations. These include the Kansai Economic Federation, the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Kansai Association of Corporate Executives. Together, they established the “Inochi Forum” in March 2023, with 135 authors contributing to the creation of the declaration.

Highlights of the Festival

  • The festival commenced with a grand performance by the Tokyo Children’s Ensemble.
  • Students from various educational institutions delivered presentations, showcasing their interpretations of the Inochi theme.
  • Atsushi Kumanogoh, the Vice Chair of the “Inochi Forum” Project Promotion Council, articulated the goals of the declaration.

Kumanogoh emphasized that the declaration seeks to promote scientific and technological progress while fostering a compassionate society. Following his speech, Takuo Dome, Executive Assistant to the President of the University of Osaka, reported on the forum’s activities. Shojiro Nishio, the Chairman of the Project Promotion Council, then read the “Inochi Declaration” aloud, highlighting the interconnectedness of all life.

Engaging Discussions

The festival featured a special talk series exploring key issues such as:

  • Reducing existing disparities in society
  • Understanding that all life possesses creative potential
  • Inspiring a model based on Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness index

Esteemed speakers included IKEGAMI Kiyoko, IWAI Mutsuo, and NAKAJIMA Sachiko, among others. Their discussions contributed to the exploration of the various facets of life and human connection.

Artistic Performances

Musician Hashimoto Masahiko performed the theme song “Inochi,” incorporating the prologue of the Inochi Declaration as lyrics. Additionally, the UOsaka Student Expo Committee “a-tune” collaborated with international peers to present a captivating show. The festival concluded with a communal Bon Odori dance, “Inochi BonBon,” drawing in participants from across the venue.

Looking Ahead

On October 13, 2025, the Osaka-Kansai Expo’s closing day featured a forum to compile the “Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan Declaration.” Former University of Osaka President Shojiro Nishio participated as a panelist, reiterating the university’s commitment to placing ‘life’ at the center of its initiatives. The “Inochi Declaration” is envisioned as a new foundation to expand into a global network, fostering deeper connections around the theme of life.
