Bronx Science Students Celebrate Alum Mamdani’s Win, Voice Caution

The Bronx High School of Science is buzzing with excitement following the election of its alumnus, Zohran Mamdani, as the new mayor of New York City. Graduating in 2010, Mamdani’s rise has inspired many students, particularly because of his youth, immigrant heritage, and Muslim faith. This milestone has given students a sense of representation in city leadership.
Bronx Science Students Reflect on Leadership
While students are thrilled by Mamdani’s victory, there is also a cautious sentiment. Many have pointed out that politicians, including those in their school’s student government, frequently fail to fulfill their promises. Bronx Science senior Keir Horne, who voted for Mamdani, expressed his reservations about the effectiveness of the alum’s proposed policies. “I’m excited about his energy, but I doubt those policies will work out,” he said.
The Challenge of Governance
Student experiences underscore their skepticism. Bronx Science seniors, including Baby Doumbouya, noted broken promises from past student government candidates. Specific examples include a pledge to improve bathroom facilities, which remains unaddressed. Doumbouya remarked, “We have promised changes like urinal dividers, but they’ve never materialized.”
- Students lament inadequate toilet paper and cleanliness issues.
- Many feel that campaign promises are often unattainable.
The students recognize that while Mamdani aims to implement significant changes, navigating the complexities of governance can be challenging. Student Zainab Ahmed acknowledged the funding issues that often limit student government’s power. “Many issues, like bathroom cleanliness, are influenced by budgeting beyond our control,” she noted.
Mamdani’s Promises and Challenges Ahead
Mamdani has outlined ambitious plans as mayor, including universal child care and rent freezes. However, these objectives hinge on approval from state lawmakers, including Governor Kathy Hochul, who opposes tax increases despite supporting child care expansion. During his victory speech, Mamdani pledged to meet high expectations in his new role, stating, “When we enter City Hall in 58 days, expectations will be high. We will meet them.”
A Diverse Learning Environment
Students at Bronx Science take pride in their school’s diversity, reflecting a mix of backgrounds and perspectives. Doumbouya highlighted that this diversity enriches the community, providing a platform for various viewpoints. “My friends come from everywhere,” he said, illustrating the multicultural environment of the school.
While Mamdani’s platform includes appealing initiatives like free services, students question the practicality of implementing these ideas. Horne, despite his concerns, remains cautiously optimistic about Mamdani’s administration. He believes that Mamdani’s engagement with young people is promising for future projects, including the previously suggested bathroom improvements.
As Bronx Science students gear up to witness Mamdani’s political journey, they hope that his leadership will not only motivate future generations but also deliver tangible results in governance.
