The Ottawa City Council has officially approved the Lansdowne 2.0 project after a final vote held on Friday. This ambitious redevelopment plan has a total budget of $419 million.

The council voted 15-10 in favor of the redevelopment, which involves replacing the aging north side stadium stands and arena with modern facilities. This new design promises an enhanced fan experience, although it features a reduction in seating capacity.
Several amendments were adopted during the voting process. These include proposals aimed at improving transit services to the area and ensuring the retention of the Ottawa Charge within the city.
Financial Concerns and Debates
The Lansdowne 2.0 project has sparked intense discussions among city councillors. Some members expressed their opposition based on financial concerns, labeling the plan as a risky investment of public funds. Coun. Ariel Troster from Somerset voiced strong objections, arguing that taxpayers should not bear the financial burden during a cost-of-living crisis. She stated, “Public lands should be used for public good, not to line the pockets of corporations.”
In contrast, Coun. Catherine Kitts from Orléans South-Navan supported the plan, acknowledging its imperfections. She highlighted the risks of delaying the project, noting that past city initiatives have often stalled or escalated in cost when postponed.
Project Timeline and Future Developments
With the council’s vote, the city is positioned to finalize its contract with EBC Inc., the designated builder. Construction on the new arena and event center is slated to commence later this year. Expectations are set for the completion of this phase by 2028, which will clear the path for further development of the north stadium stands.
Additionally, the Mirabella Development Corporation is expected to finish the construction of two residential towers by 2034. This timeline reflects the city’s commitment to revitalizing the Lansdowne area through modern infrastructure.
