Typhoon Kalmaegi Claims 191 Lives Across Vietnam and the Philippines

Typhoon Kalmaegi has wreaked havoc across Southeast Asia, resulting in 191 confirmed deaths in Vietnam and the Philippines. The storm, known as Tino in the Philippines, has significantly impacted multiple regions, prompting emergency responses and evacuations.
Devastation in the Philippines
Before striking Vietnam, Typhoon Kalmaegi left a wake of destruction in the Philippines. Official reports confirm that at least 188 lives were lost, while tens of thousands were forced to evacuate, especially from central regions like Cebu, a major island known for its tourism.
Impact on Cebu
Cebu experienced unprecedented rainfall, equivalent to a month’s worth, within just 24 hours. This led to severe flooding, sweeping away vehicles and littering the streets with debris. The combination of heavy rainfall and poor infrastructure has devastated many neighborhoods, particularly in less affluent areas.
- Buses and shipping containers were seen being tossed by floodwaters.
- Residents reported seeing entire neighborhoods destroyed.
In Talisay City, one of the areas hardest hit, Mely Saberon described her despair after losing her home. “We don’t have any home anymore. We weren’t able to salvage anything,” she stated. Survivors expressed disbelief at the ferocity of the winds and rain, noting that previous storms were not as severe.
Emergency Declared
As the situation unfolded, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines declared a state of emergency early on Thursday. This declaration responds to the mass casualties, extensive property damage, and significant disruptions to daily life in affected communities.
Current Situation in Vietnam
Following its impact in the Philippines, Typhoon Kalmaegi proceeded to Vietnam, where additional casualties and damage are anticipated. Authorities are on high alert as the storm continues to pose a threat to local populations.
With ongoing recovery efforts and the challenge of clean-up ahead, affected individuals and communities face an arduous journey toward rebuilding their lives amidst the aftermath of Typhoon Kalmaegi.
