TV Star Rejects Crucial Implant to Avoid Disappointing Fans

A close friend of the late Paul O’Grady has revealed that the beloved TV star declined a critical heart operation just months before his passing. O’Grady, who was 67 years old when he died in March 2023, suffered from sudden cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that can result in cardiac arrest.
Declining the Implantable Defibrillator
Malcolm Prince, a close friend and producer of O’Grady, disclosed that the entertainer refused an implantable defibrillator. He made this decision to avoid disappointing his fans amidst his working commitments, including a role in the UK tour of the musical Annie.
According to Prince, O’Grady expressed a desire to live life to the fullest without the interruption of hospital visits. He communicated with his daughter, Sharyn, indicating that he would not pursue the defibrillator. “He didn’t want to go back into hospital… He wanted to get on and live his life but also work,” Prince stated.
Concerns About Public Perception
O’Grady’s manager, Joan Marshrons, shared insights into his reluctance to undergo the procedure, highlighting his fear of losing control. He was reportedly nervous about the implications of wearing a defibrillator and how it might affect his public appearances.
Honoring His Legacy
His story is captured in Malcolm Prince’s upcoming book, “Paul O’Grady: Not The Same Without You,” which includes reflections from family, friends, and colleagues. The book details O’Grady’s rise to fame as Lily Savage and his struggles with self-image, including suggestions of an eating disorder related to his need to maintain a slim figure for his drag persona.
Last month, a special headstone was finally erected for O’Grady at St Rumwold’s Church in Bonnington, two-and-a-half years posthumously. The headstone honors not only him but also his former long-term partner, Brendan Murphy.
