Former Kellingley Social Club Demolition Commences

Demolition has commenced at the Kellingley Social Club, a once-popular venue in Knottingley. The initiative aims to pave the way for modern community and sports facilities in the area.

Plans for the Kellingley Social Club Site

In July of the previous year, Wakefield Council greenlit plans to demolish the aging structure. The new development will feature a sports pavilion equipped with a bar, function room, changing facilities, and spectator areas. This comprehensive project, estimated at £6.3 million, is a key part of the broader Knottingley and Ferrybridge masterplan.

Community Benefits and Regeneration Efforts

Jack Hemingway, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, expressed enthusiasm about the project. He stated, “Residents have been waiting a long time to see this building come down, so it’s great to see progress happening on site.” The investment is designed to transform the site into a modern community hub that local residents can proudly utilize.

Safety and Security Measures

Earlier this year, preparations for demolition included the safe removal of internal fixtures and hazardous materials. Unfortunately, vandalism delayed progress, prompting the council to enhance security measures at the site.

  • Round-the-clock security is now in place to protect the area.
  • Residents are advised to avoid the site during demolition.

Timeline for Demolition and Development

Funding for this initiative comes from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The next phase of the demolition is set to begin by early January 2024, with the entire project anticipated to conclude in early 2026.

The development at the Kellingley Social Club represents an important step in rejuvenating the Knottingley area, promising improved facilities for residents and visitors alike.
