Disney Launches First Storyliving Community in Coachella Valley Real Estate Venture

Disney has officially launched its first Storyliving community, Cotino, located in Rancho Mirage, California. This new development marks a significant venture into real estate for the iconic entertainment company, following their successful Golden Oak community in Orlando, Florida.

Cotino: A Unique Disney Real Estate Experience

Cotino is designed to provide a distinct lifestyle experience rather than a traditional Disney-themed environment. Claire Bilby, the Senior Vice President of Storyliving by Disney, emphasizes that the community caters primarily to baby boomers and Generation X, leveraging the nostalgia associated with Walt Disney.

Historical Connection

Rancho Mirage holds historical significance for Disney, as it was a favored retreat for Walt Disney himself. Notably, the Palm Springs airport was established to facilitate Disney’s travels to his second home in the area.

Details About Cotino Community

Cotino operates on a licensing model, partnering with developers while maintaining a creative role in shaping each community’s unique story. Homes are built by reputable developers such as Davidson Communities, Shea Homes, and Woodbridge Pacific Group. Prices for properties start around $1.3 million for a two-bedroom home with luxury amenities.

  • Initial phase includes over 300 homes.
  • Future projections involve constructing more than 1,900 residential units.
  • Community includes facilities for those aged 55 and older, along with condos.

Bilby explains that the homes have thoughtful design touches but are not overtly themed, creating a comfortable living environment year-round.

Amenities for Residents

Residents can join the Artisan Club, providing access to exclusive amenities. This club features:

  • A table-service restaurant named Architects Fork
  • An outdoor bar called Plot Twist
  • A wellness center and outdoor sports courts
  • A creative studio for art classes
  • Cotino Bay, a large swimming and recreational area

Inside the Artisan Club, there will be references to Disney films, including a replica of the Parr House from “The Incredibles 2.” Membership comes with two tiers, requiring a one-time initiation fee of $20,000, with varying annual dues and family access rules.

Future Developments

While Cotino is still under development, Disney has announced plans for a second Storyliving community, named Asteria, just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. This future project is set to accommodate around 4,000 residents, with sales projected to start in 2027.

The launch of Cotino reflects Disney’s commitment to creating unique lifestyle communities that resonate with their fan base while expanding their footprint in the real estate market.
