Report: Nats’ Cairo Not Securing Permanent Position

In recent developments, interim manager Miguel Cairo of the Washington Nationals will not continue in his role as head coach. This decision comes after he took over from Dave Martinez, who was dismissed in July 2025. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed these changes, although they preferred to remain anonymous until an official announcement is made.

Nationals Coaching Staff Changes

The coaching shakeup extends beyond Cairo. Several prominent coaches will also part ways with the team. The list includes:

  • Jim Hickey – Pitching Coach
  • Darnell Coles – Hitting Coach
  • Ricky Bones – Bullpen Coach
  • Gerardo Parra – First-base Coach
  • Ricky Gutierrez – Third-base Coach

This overhaul of the coaching staff follows a disappointing 66-96 record in 2025, leaving the Nationals in 14th place out of 15 teams in the National League. The franchise has faced challenges, enduring six consecutive losing seasons since capturing the World Series title in 2019.

Leadership Changes and Team Direction

The recent staff changes coincide with Paul Toboni’s appointment as the new president of baseball operations. Toboni, previously an assistant general manager with the Boston Red Sox, was introduced during a press conference at Nationals Park on October 1. Nationals owner Mark Lerner expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s current trajectory, stating, “We’re not happy where we are right now. That’s why we brought in Paul.”

Lerner urged fans not to lose hope, indicating that the organization is committed to rebuilding and returning to competitive form. The Nationals’ leadership is now focused on establishing a new direction for the team moving forward.

As the Nationals head into the off-season, questions remain about their next steps in achieving stability and success on the field. With several key coaching positions now open, Washington will need to act swiftly to secure effective leadership for the upcoming season.
