“MPD Boosts Presence in Navy Yard After Unacceptable Behavior”

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has reported an increased law enforcement presence in Navy Yard following a disturbance involving numerous juveniles. This incident unfolded on Friday night, October 31, 2025, starting around 7:30 p.m. The MPD had initially noticed several groups of young individuals gathering near the park area between First Street and New Jersey Avenue, adjacent to the Navy Yard Metro Station.

Incident Overview

By 8:00 p.m., the crowd grew to several hundred juveniles. Initially, the atmosphere was calm. However, as the night progressed, participants began engaging in fights and obstructing traffic. Many ignored police instructions to stay on the sidewalks.

Response from Law Enforcement

In response to the escalating situation, the MPD, along with additional law enforcement agencies—including Metro Transit Police, the United States Capitol Police, the National Guard, and members of the Federal Task Force—act swiftly. Streets were closed to minimize disruptions and restore order.

  • Cleared the park area.
  • Directed juveniles toward the Navy Yard Metro Station.
  • Dispersed the crowd by approximately 11:00 p.m.

Even after dispersing the group, MPD maintained a strong presence throughout the night to prevent further disturbances.

Arrests Made

As a result of the incident, the MPD reported five arrests:

  • Kaeden Brown, 18, Accokeek, Maryland: Possession of a Prohibited Weapon (Knife).
  • 16-year-old male, Southwest DC: Public Consumption of Marijuana.
  • 15-year-old male, Southeast DC: Affray.
  • 14-year-old male, Southeast DC: Failure to Obey and Resisting Arrest.
  • 14-year-old male, Southwest DC: Failure to Obey and Resisting Arrest.

Additional arrests were made by Metro Transit Police. During the incident, one MPD Sergeant sustained minor injuries while attempting to restore order.

Law Enforcement’s Commitment

Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith condemned the group’s behavior, labeling it as unacceptable. She announced an increase in police presence for the following evening to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. “This group chose not to participate in the Halloween events organized by MPD and our partners and instead gathered inappropriately,” said Smith.

To enhance safety, MPD plans to close several streets around the park area south of M Street, Southeast, addressing potential issues proactively. Residents and visitors can anticipate a higher visibility of law enforcement personnel in the area.

MPD encourages anyone with further information regarding the disorderly conduct to contact them at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
