Premier League Limits Boxing Day Games Due to UEFA Competitions

In a recent announcement, the Premier League confirmed its full fixture schedule for December. This confirmation came 16 days later than initially expected due to calendar complexities. The Football Supporters’ Association expressed frustration at the late announcement, particularly regarding Newcastle’s game at Old Trafford, which is scheduled for an 8 PM kick-off on Boxing Day. The late match selection has drawn criticism from fans.

Boxing Day and Matchweek Schedule

This year, Boxing Day falls on a Friday, December 26. Following this, seven matches are set for Saturday, December 27, with the matchweek 18 concluded by two more games on December 28. Last season was notable as it marked the first year of expanded UEFA club competitions, during which eight Premier League matches were held on December 26.

Future Assurances from Premier League

Looking ahead, the Premier League has assured fans that next season will see an increase in Boxing Day matches since the date will land on a Saturday. The league is committed to prioritizing player welfare during the busy festive period.

  • Special arrangements will provide more recovery time between games.
  • Clubs will not play within 60 hours of one another.

In July, FIFA and player representatives reached a consensus on a minimum 72-hour rest period between matches. This decision aims to enhance player health and performance during one of the most demanding times of the year.
