Among the star-studded attendees were talented celebrities who captivated the audience both in the front row and on stage. A particularly noteworthy moment occurred during the sixth act of the night, which paid tribute to Afrofuturism and the remarkable work of renowned costume designer Ruth E. Carter.
A Celebration of Ruth E. Carter’s Work
- Carter is an Academy Award-winning designer known for her iconic work in films like “School Daze,” “Malcolm X,” and “Sinners.”
- In 2019, she made history as the first Black woman to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on “Black Panther.”
This recognition solidified Carter’s impact on visual storytelling within the film industry. During the Vogue event, Danai Gurira and Teyana Taylor appeared on stage wearing Carter’s original designs from the groundbreaking film “Black Panther.” They showcased the stunning red-and-silver battle armor of the Dora Milaje, an all-female royal guard from Wakanda.
Angela Bassett’s Stunning Appearance
Angela Bassett also made a memorable appearance in a striking purple gown that she wore while portraying Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” She was accompanied by actor Damson Idris, enhancing the night’s celebratory atmosphere.
The presentation underscored the significant cultural impact of Carter’s work and the enduring legacy of the “Black Panther” franchise. Released in 2018, the original film grossed over $1.3 billion globally and received seven Academy Award nominations, winning three. Its sequel, directed by Ryan Coogler, debuted in 2022, navigating the story following Chadwick Boseman’s passing.
