Explore a Former Opium Trader’s Castle, Now a Celebrity Wedding Venue

Ardross Castle, a historical estate located in the Scottish Highlands, has gained newfound fame as a celebrity wedding venue and filming location for the reality show “The Traitors.” This stunning 19th-century structure, north of Inverness, is rich in history and architectural beauty.
History of Ardross Castle
The castle’s journey began in the late 1700s when the 1st Duke of Sutherland purchased the estate, initially constructing a hunting lodge. However, it was Sir Alexander Matheson, a Member of Parliament and an opium trader, who purchased the estate in 1845 for £90,000. Under Matheson’s direction, the Gothic Scottish Baronial style was adopted, transforming the property significantly.
Architectural Developments
Renowned architect Alexander Ross was commissioned to expand the mansion. His work included adding around 30 rooms, along with landscaping features like a pond and fountain. The improvements cost approximately £7,000. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the property changed hands numerous times, ultimately being sold off in parts in 1937.
Modern Usage
In 1983, the McTaggart family acquired Ardross Castle and undertook restoration efforts. Today, this historic venue is popular for corporate functions, private events, and fashion shows. It also functions as a film and television set.
Celebrity Weddings and Events
- Weddings at Ardross Castle can accommodate up to 130 guests.
- Prices for two-night weddings start at £45,000.

The thrilling dynamic of deception leads to daily banishments, captured amidst the castle’s opulent indoor settings.
