Storm Brings Rain, Wind, and Flood Warnings to NYC Area

The New York City area is experiencing significant weather disruptions following a powerful storm that swept through the region. This system has brought gusty winds, heavy rain, and raised concerns over possible coastal flooding.

Current Weather Warnings and Advisories

A flash flood warning is currently in effect for both New York City and Westchester County, set to last until 5:30 p.m. today. Additionally, the Jersey Shore is under a wind advisory until 5 p.m., with gusts expected to reach up to 50 mph. Coastal flood advisories have also been issued, allowing for potential inundation of up to two feet.

Impact on Transportation

  • Reports indicate fallen trees throughout New Jersey, affecting local transportation.
  • NJ Transit temporarily suspended service along the Long Branch line due to a downed tree but has since resumed with delays.
  • Service disruptions have also been reported at regional airports, complicating travel plans.

Damage Reports

Before noon today, reports of structural damage began to surface. Notable incidents include:

  • A large tree down on Rockland Avenue in Yonkers.
  • An additional tree reported down at East 230th Street and White Plains Road in the Bronx.

Storm Timing and Rainfall Expectations

Throughout the day, the storm is expected to deliver sustained rain. While the precipitation may not be continuous, heavy downpours, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms, are anticipated. Winds will continue to range from 30 to 50 mph, intensifying the risk of coastal flooding along the Jersey Shore.

Rainfall totals are projected between 1 to 2 inches, with localized amounts possibly reaching 3 inches.

Halloween Forecast

Looking ahead, Halloween on Friday is forecasted to be relatively dry, although some residual showers may linger early in the day. However, conditions should clear up by the time children head out to trick-or-treat.

A gusty wind is expected to persist, with peak gusts ranging from 35 to 45 mph. This year’s temperatures will be markedly cooler than last, with highs struggling to reach the mid-50s, contrasting sharply with last year’s record warmth of 81 degrees.

As the storm passes, attention will shift to weather conditions for the New York City Marathon scheduled for Sunday.
