Brendan Rodgers Resigns; O’Neill Returns as Celtic Manager

Brendan Rodgers has stepped down as the manager of Celtic, a move that has surprised many fans and analysts alike. In an unusual twist, Martin O’Neill will temporarily return to manage the club.

Brendan Rodgers Resigns from Celtic

Rodgers, 52, had a brief but impactful second tenure at Celtic, starting in 2023. During his return, he secured consecutive league titles, adding to his previous successes in 2017 and 2018. However, this season has not begun favorably for the champions, who currently find themselves eight points behind Hearts after nine matches.

A press release from the club confirmed that Rodgers offered his resignation, which was promptly accepted. His exit prompted a response from Dermot Desmond, Celtic’s largest shareholder, who publicly criticized Rodgers. Desmond described the manager’s actions as “divisive, misleading, and self-serving.”

Martin O’Neill’s Return

Martin O’Neill, who is 73, is taking over as the interim manager. O’Neill boasts a successful history with Celtic, having managed the team from 2000 to 2005. During his earlier tenure, he led the club to:

  • Three Scottish Premier League titles
  • Three Scottish Cups
  • One League Cup

Joining O’Neill is Shaun Maloney, who brings additional experience to the coaching staff. Maloney has previously played for Celtic and has managed teams such as Hibernian and Wigan Athletic.

The upcoming matches will be crucial for Celtic as they seek to regain form under O’Neill’s leadership. Fans will be hopeful that the return of a familiar figure can turn the club’s fortunes around this season.
