Western Washington Faces Weekend of Heavy Rain, Strong Winds, and Mountain Snow

Western Washington is bracing for a weekend marked by heavy rain, strong winds, and mountain snow. The region is experiencing its first atmospheric river of the fall season, with expected rainfall ranging from 1 to 3 inches.
Weather Alerts and Expectations
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Gale Watch is in effect from Saturday morning through late Saturday night for the northern coast. Additionally, a Wind Advisory will remain active until 5 a.m. on Sunday for some areas in northwest and west central Washington.
Saturday Weather Forecast
Heavy rain showers and gusty winds are anticipated as a second front moves in. The cooler air will likely lower the snow level in the Cascades to around 3,500 feet by 4 p.m. on Saturday. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued starting at 11 p.m. on Saturday and will last through Sunday night.
Snow Accumulations
- North Cascades, including popular destinations like Mount Rainier and Snoqualmie Pass, are expected to see significant snow.
- Total accumulations may reach 6 to 10 inches at elevations above 3,500 feet.
- Mount Rainier could receive between 10 and 14 inches of fresh snow.
- Stevens, White, and Blewitt Passes may experience steady snowfall, while Snoqualmie could see a mix of rain and sleet.
Notably, State Route 410 Chinook Pass and State Route 123 Cayuse Pass closed for the season on Friday, due to the anticipated snowfall.
Preparing for Winter Conditions
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has been preparing for winter by training crews and equipping vehicles. They urge the public to also prepare for winter driving conditions.
Sunday Outlook
The forecast for Sunday includes a continuation of heavy showers and cool temperatures, as well as more snowfall in the mountain passes. Gusty winds will persist in lowland areas, making travel potentially hazardous.
