Sources Confirm Falcons Likely to Start Cousins

Sources have indicated that Kirk Cousins is on track to be the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback for their upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins. This information was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday morning.

Kirk Cousins Likely to Start for Falcons

Cousins’ potential start comes after the team’s current quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., sustained a bone bruise in his left knee during last week’s match against the San Francisco 49ers. Due to this injury, Penix was limited in practice and is considered questionable for the matchup on Sunday.

Coach Comments on Quarterback Situation

The Falcons’ head coach, Raheem Morris, expressed confidence in Cousins’ abilities following the team’s training sessions. Morris noted that Cousins has taken significant reps during practice, particularly later in the week. He stated, “We’re gonna give [Penix] every opportunity we can give him. The kid is tough. He’s a guy, he’s a stud.”

Quarterback Performance and History

The decision to start Cousins seems timely, coinciding with the 10-year anniversary of his memorable postgame moment from a 31-30 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he famously exclaimed, “You like that?!”

Cousins, now 37 years old, had a promising start with the Falcons last season, achieving a record of 6-3. However, he faced challenges, including nine interceptions over a five-game stretch after suffering injuries to his right elbow and shoulder in Week 10. As a result, he was benched in favor of rookie Penix in Week 16.

Penix has had a mixed starting record, now sitting at 4-5 overall, including the Falcons’ current 3-3 record this season. He has completed 61% of his passes, accumulating 1,409 yards, with five touchdowns and three interceptions. His performance reflects a QBR of 47.7, ranking him 22nd in the league.

  • Cousins’ Age: 37
  • Penix’s Injury: Bone bruise in left knee
  • Penix’s Stats: 61% completion rate, 1,409 yards, 5 TDs, 3 INTs, 47.7 QBR
  • Team Record: 3-3 this season

The upcoming game against the Dolphins will be crucial for the Falcons, with their quarterback position currently in a state of flux. How the team responds to this challenge could set the tone for the remainder of their season.
