Southside Business Owners Report Spike in Crime Recently

In recent weeks, Southside business owners in San Antonio have reported a troubling increase in criminal activity. The incidents have raised concerns among the local community, particularly along Pleasanton Road.

Reported Incidents of Crime

Rudy Lopez, manager of Pica Pica Plaza, shared that palm trees outside his establishment were set ablaze early Tuesday morning. He noted that other businesses on Pleasanton Road have faced similar criminal acts.

Vanessa Salazar, owner of La Sorpresa restaurant, revealed her establishment has been broken into four times within the last two months. “I came in and everything was a mess where the register was at,” she described. Salazar speculated that the same individual may be involved or that it could involve a transient from the area. “There have been too many break-ins along Pleasanton,” she added, voicing frustrations over the lack of effective law enforcement response.

Community Reactions

  • Jack Daniel, a loyal customer of Lord’s Barbershop, expressed concerns about the ongoing crime wave affecting local businesses.
  • He indicated that the perpetrators likely know their targets, hinting at a deeper problem within the community.
  • Both Salazar and the barbershop owner reported damages exceeding $3,000 from these incidents.

Daniel remarked, “It’s probably someone around here that knows the system. The law is not getting to it.” This sentiment reflects the growing unease among business owners on the South Side.

City Response and Recommendations

KSAT reached out to District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis J. Viagran’s office for comments regarding public safety and city reactions. A spokesperson stated that Viagran would be briefed on these incidents soon.

The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has recommended that business owners connect with a San Antonio Fear Free Environment (SAFFE) officer. These officers offer Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) tips, which can help bolster safety measures. Suggestions might include improving lighting and maintaining vegetation to deter criminal activity.

A Call for Community Vigilance

Lopez urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior. “Whoever it was, we forgive you,” he said. “Just stay away from Pica and don’t do it to us or other communities.”

The increase in crime on the Southside highlights the urgent need for local businesses and residents to collaborate in ensuring safety and protecting their livelihoods.
