Newsom Accuses Trump of Rigging Election with Federal Poll Watchers

California Governor Gavin Newsom has recently accused former President Donald Trump of attempting to manipulate the electoral process. This allegation arose in the context of the upcoming deployment of federal poll watchers across the state, an action Newsom believes may undermine the integrity of the election.
Federal Poll Watchers and Election Integrity
Newsom expressed concerns that federal poll watchers could spark discontent among voters. He warned that their presence might lead to claims of election fraud if the results are not favorable to Trump. “They will express discontent with that,” he predicted.
The governor specifically mentioned that the federal monitoring initiative would potentially involve other federal agencies, including the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents. “You’re going to see these masked men from Border Patrol near voting booths and polling places,” he elaborated.
Local Election Officials’ Response
In response to these federal plans, local election officials in California have taken a more reserved stance. Dean Logan, the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, commented on the situation, stating:
- The presence of election observers is standard across the country.
- Federal monitors are welcome as part of ensuring transparency in the election process.
- California law specifically supports observation and prohibits interference with elections.
National Monitoring Efforts
The Department of Justice (DOJ), under the Biden administration, announced that poll watchers would be deployed in 86 jurisdictions across 27 states, including San Joaquin County in California. This decision aims to maintain oversight during the 2024 elections.
Conflict Between State and Federal Actions
The move to send federal monitors has intensified the ongoing disputes between Newsom and Trump regarding federal intervention in California. Earlier this year, Trump federalized over 4,000 National Guard troops in Los Angeles, despite Newsom’s objections. Furthermore, Border Patrol officers have recently been dispatched to the Bay Area in anticipation of an immigration operation.
Trump had initially planned a federal intervention in San Francisco but later canceled the operation following discussions with Mayor London Breed. Similarly, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee confirmed that an expected immigration enforcement action was canceled in the greater Bay Area.
Impact on California Residents
In a recent interview, Newsom highlighted the tension created by these federal actions, noting a “chill” effect on the residents of California. His statements reflect broader concerns about how federal interventions could influence voter behavior and perceptions of election fairness ahead of the upcoming elections.
