This significant project has been undertaken by Shropshire Council, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and executed by local craftsmen from Phillips and Curry Ltd.
Cambrian Railway Restoration Details
Work on the historic building began in July 2024 and concluded in May 2025. The restoration focused on several critical aspects:
- Repairing the building’s exterior to prevent masonry deterioration
- Removing hazardous asbestos tiles and replacing them with Welsh slate
- Refreshing windows and doors in the original Cambrian Railway colors
- Installing nesting boxes for swifts and bat roosting tiles under the eaves
Acknowledgment and Future Use
The project has received high praise from judges. One judge remarked on the outstanding quality of work achieved on a budget of £1 million. They expressed hope that the building will eventually become desirable living spaces and accommodate the heritage railway and commercial enterprises.
Another judge commended Shropshire Council for preserving the landmark and fulfilling community needs. Significant efforts were made to collaborate with local artisans throughout the project.
Roger Evans, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for finance, commented on the cultural significance of the building. He praised the council’s property services team and the conservation experts involved, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the site for future generations.
Building History and Funding
The Grade II-listed building has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1866. It served as Oswestry’s local railway station and the headquarters of the Cambrian Railway until it closed in 1966. After years of neglect and storm damage, Shropshire Council acquired the property in early 2023 to facilitate its restoration.
Currently, the ground floor is utilized by Cambrian Heritage Railways, a local charity. The restoration project received substantial financial backing of £765,250 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Rural England Prosperity Fund.
Award Ceremony
The winners of the National Railway Heritage Award will be announced at a ceremony in London on December 3, 2025. This nomination not only acknowledges the successful restoration of the Cambrian Railway building but also highlights the commitment to preserving cultural heritage in Oswestry.
