FBI Charges Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier in Illegal Sports Betting Case

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier has been arrested in connection with a federal sports betting and money laundering investigation. The arrest occurred early Thursday morning in Orlando, Florida, shortly after the Heat’s season opener against the Orlando Magic.
Details of the Charges Against Terry Rozier
Federal prosecutors allege that Rozier participated in a conspiracy which involved utilizing nonpublic information about NBA players to place illegal wagers. This included information about player injuries and game absences. U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella from the Eastern District of New York announced that Rozier is one of six defendants in a significant federal operation that reveals a connection between illegal gambling and organized crime.
Rozier faces two serious charges: conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. According to Nocella, this fraud operated over several years, presenting a “wide-sweeping criminal enterprise” that blurred distinctions between professional basketball and organized crime activities.
Terry Rozier’s Legal Defense
The defense attorney for Rozier, James Trusty, criticized the arrest, asserting that his client had fully cooperated with authorities. Trusty claimed that prosecutors initially referred to Rozier as a “subject, not a target,” implying that the arrest was unnecessarily publicized. He expressed disbelief over the handling of the case and stated that Rozier looks forward to contesting the charges.
After his arrest, Rozier was released on a $6 million bond, using his Florida residence to secure the funds. His arrest occurred mere hours after the Heat’s game, where he was listed to play but did not participate.
Connections to Broader Criminal Activity
In a related investigation, a second case has emerged involving 31 individuals charged with operating illegal poker games believed to be manipulated through technology. This investigation involves ties to prominent New York organized crime families, including the Bonanno, Gambino, and Genovese families.
- Federal charges have also been brought against former NBA player Damon Jones.
- Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was arrested in connection with this case.
- A total of 34 defendants are currently involved in these investigations.
NBA’s Response to the Allegations
In light of the arrests, the NBA has placed both Rozier and Billups on leave, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport. The league is reviewing the federal indictments and will cooperatively engage with law enforcement authorities.
Earlier this year, former NBA player Gilbert Arenas was also arrested for operating an illegal gambling ring in California, highlighting a broader trend of scrutiny within the league regarding gambling-related misconduct.
Terry Rozier’s NBA Career
Before joining the Miami Heat, Rozier played four seasons with the Boston Celtics. He emerged as a significant player during the 2017-18 playoffs, averaging over 16 points per game and aiding the Celtics’ deep postseason run. He later spent four and a half seasons with the Charlotte Hornets before being traded to the Heat in early 2024.
As investigations continue, the implications of these allegations remain significant for Rozier’s career and the NBA at large. The integration of illegal activities within professional sports raises pressing questions about integrity and oversight.
