Lake Placid Garden Club Awards Green Thumb Honors

The Garden Club of Lake Placid celebrated local gardeners with the esteemed Green Thumb Award as the gardening season wraps up. Recognizing their dedication, the club honored four homeowners for contributing vibrant floral displays to the community.
Green Thumb Award Recipients
This year, the following residents received Green Thumb Awards for their gardening efforts:
- Jenifer Briggs – Church Street
- Deborah Pelkey – Acorn Street
- Dorine and Ed Peregrim – Liberty Hill Lane
- Carol and Karl Scott – Grandview Avenue
Each awardee was presented with handcrafted copper garden markers and tulip bulbs, enhancing their gardens for spring blooms. Many of these gardens extend beyond front yards, showcasing a variety of plant species, including those gifted by friends.
Impact of the Garden Club
The Garden Club of Lake Placid has historically played a significant role in beautifying the community. Transitioning from volunteer efforts to professional landscaping, the club now maintains key projects such as:
- Courtyard Garden at Elderwood of Uihlein Assisted Living
- Triangle Garden across from the North Elba Show Grounds
Local dining establishments like The Cottage and Lisa G’s support these community work sessions, fostering a partnership between gardening enthusiasts and local businesses.
Fall Gardening Tips
This fall, gardeners face unique cleanup challenges due to early frosts. With temperatures dipping into the twenties, it’s essential to prepare gardens for winter effectively. Key considerations include:
- Leaving standing stems and seed heads for birds.
- Minimizing foliage cutting and adding mulch for plant protection.
- Managing self-seeding plants around main specimens.
- Allowing leaves to decay naturally to enrich the soil.
For seasonal residents, thorough garden cleanup is crucial to prevent rot from heavy plant material before spring arrives.
Upcoming Events
Members of the Garden Club enjoyed a final fall excursion to Whiteface Mountain, capturing the peak foliage views. Looking ahead, the club will gather to create 100 winter holiday swags. These decorations will be displayed throughout the village, spreading festive cheer for all to enjoy.
