Honoring Brentford’s First 11 Black Players

In recognition of Black History Month, Brentford Football Club is participating in the ‘First 11 Black Players’ campaign by Show Racism the Red Card. This initiative aims to honor the pioneering contributions of the first eleven Black players to represent the club in the Football League. The project will culminate in an exhibition displayed at Brentford’s home match against Liverpool, along with a travelling exhibition across the country.
Brentford’s First 11 Black Players
The exhibition showcases the remarkable journeys of Brentford’s first Black players, emphasizing their impact on the club’s history and the broader community.
- Chris Kamara MBE (1981-85)
Position: Midfielder | Appearances: 190 | Goals: 32
Kamara made history as Brentford’s first Black player in October 1981. He captained the team for over 100 matches and was named Player of the Year in 1982-83. He played his last game in the Freight Rover Trophy Final at Wembley in June 1985. - Terry Rowe (1981-84)
Position: Defender | Appearances: 81 | Goals: 1
Rowe progressed from Brentford Juniors to the first team, making his debut in February 1982. His reliability as a right-back set an example for future Black athletes in the club. - Francis Joseph (1982-87)
Position: Forward | Appearances: 138 | Goals: 56
Joining Brentford after scoring against them previously, Joseph made a significant impact, being the top scorer in his first two seasons. He passed away in 2022 at age 62. - Keith Cassells (1983-85)
Position: Forward | Appearances: 102 | Goals: 36
Cassells was a top goalscorer for Brentford during the 1984-85 season and showcased his commitment to equality by engaging in discussions on racism. - Tony Lynch (1983-86)

From the youth ranks to the first team, Lynch displayed creativity on the right wing, marking an important chapter in Brentford’s youth development. - Bobby Fisher (1984-86)

Fisher was signed to strengthen the defense, becoming a key right-back, contributing significantly to the team’s stability. - Roger Joseph (1985-88)

Joseph established himself as a first-choice player and made history with his brother Francis by both scoring in a league match. - Tony Obi (1986, Loan)

Obi was the first Black player loaned to Brentford, providing crucial support during his time with the team. - Henry Hughton (1986)

Hughton helped during a challenging time for the squad with injuries, contributing valuable defensive support. - Paul Smith (1987-88)

Smith joined Brentford after leaving Arsenal, contributing to the team’s attack during his single season at the club. - Keith Jones (1987-91)
Position: Midfielder | Appearances: 213 | Goals: 20
Jones was a pivotal player, captaining the team for 167 games and leading Brentford back to the second tier for the first time since 1954.
This initiative not only commemorates the accomplishments of these players but also emphasizes the significant role the Black community has played in Brentford’s history.
