Amiel Sawdaye, Matt Forman Shortlisted for Rockies GM Position

The Colorado Rockies are in the process of selecting a new head of baseball operations. Two notable finalists for the position are Amiel Sawdaye from the Arizona Diamondbacks and Matt Forman from the Cleveland Guardians. This information was confirmed by league sources who indicated that the Rockies are narrowing down their options.

Finalists for the Rockies GM Position

Amiel Sawdaye has an impressive track record. He began his career with the Boston Red Sox, eventually rising to the role of director of amateur scouting. He then joined the Diamondbacks as the senior vice president and assistant general manager. Moreover, he briefly served as the acting GM in 2021 during a leave of absence taken by Mike Hazen, the team’s general manager.

On the other hand, Matt Forman is currently the assistant general manager under Cleveland’s president of baseball operations, Chris Antonetti. Forman’s journey in the Guardians organization started with an internship in 2013. Over the years, he has climbed the ranks and was appointed executive vice president in January 2022.

Changes in the Rockies Front Office

The Rockies are looking for a fresh direction after Bill Schmidt stepped down from the general manager position earlier this month. Soon after, assistant GM Zack Rosenthal also resigned. As a result, the team is actively seeking external candidates for the head of baseball operations role.

This search is being led by executive vice president Walker Monfort, the son of team owner Dick Monfort. The next round of interviews is anticipated to begin later this week. It is uncertain what title the new hire will hold, whether it be president or GM.

Upcoming Challenges

One of the immediate tasks for the new hire will be to recruit a new manager for the Rockies. Currently, Colorado is among six major league teams without a manager, along with the Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins, and Atlanta Braves.

The Rockies aim to have this position filled by early November, coinciding with the general manager meetings scheduled for that time. This hiring process is crucial as it will shape the team’s future strategies and direction.
