NFL’s Troy Vincent Suggests Revisiting Onside Kick Alternatives

The National Football League (NFL) has not explored alternatives to the onside kick this offseason, but discussions could soon be on the horizon. The league reports increased kickoff returns following the shift to the dynamic kickoff. However, the NFL is concerned about the low success rate of onside kicks.
Onside Kick Performance Statistics
In 2024, teams attempted 50 onside kicks, with just three being successful. The rules allow these attempts only in the fourth quarter. This season, from 21 attempts, only one was recovered by the kicking team. The new regulations permit onside kicks at any time, but teams must declare their intentions in advance.
Previous Proposals and Current Discussions
A proposal to replace onside kicks with a 4th-and-20 play was voted down in 2024. Recently, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent indicated that further dialogue on alternatives may occur. He stated, “When you start getting a less than five percent recovery rate, it may be time for the membership to revisit some of those things that may be out of ordinary.”
Future Implications
The effectiveness of onside kicks for the remainder of the season will likely influence future discussions at league meetings. The NFL must balance maintaining the excitement of the game with the viability of current rules.
