Newsom Deploys CA National Guard to Address Food Assistance Delays

In response to the ongoing federal government shutdown, California Governor Gavin Newsom has launched an initiative to address delays in food assistance. This effort comes as the shutdown enters its third week and threatens the food benefits of millions of residents.

Governor’s Support Measures

To mitigate the impact, Governor Newsom has allocated $80 million in state funds aimed at supporting food banks. He also authorized the deployment of the California National Guard to assist in food distribution efforts throughout the state.

Impending Food Assistance Disruptions

The California Department of Social Services issued notifications to counties indicating that federally-funded food benefits, known as CalFresh, may face interruptions. Without federal action or a resolution to the shutdown by Thursday, about 5.5 million low-income Californians, including nearly 3.5 million children and seniors, could miss their assistance for November.

CalFresh Program Overview

  • Approximately 5.5 million Californians rely on CalFresh.
  • The state distributes about $1.1 billion in benefits each month.
  • October benefits have been distributed, but applicants from mid-October onward may face delays.

Furthermore, recipients of the California Food Assistance Program, which supports eligible noncitizens, should also prepare for delays. Angela Shing, former director in charge of employment and benefit services in Santa Clara County, emphasized the vulnerability of beneficiaries, primarily children and the elderly. She highlighted the difficult choices they may face, such as whether to pay rent or buy food.

Federal Response and Claims

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has remained unresponsive but provided a memo dated October 10, indicating insufficient funds for November benefits. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins criticized Democrats for prioritizing healthcare for undocumented immigrants allegedly at the expense of food security.

Food Insecurity Statistics

In 2023, nearly 25% of California households encountered food insecurity, as reported by the Public Policy Institute of California. This alarming statistic has led to local initiatives, particularly in San Diego County, where food banks are launching pop-up services to support military personnel and federal employees affected by the shutdown.

As the situation develops, these state-level interventions reflect the urgent need to secure food access for vulnerable populations amid the federal budget impasse.
