Eurostar Purchases First Double-Decker Trains

Eurostar has announced a significant advancement in its services with the purchase of its first double-decker trains in a €2 billion (£1.74 billion) deal. The order was confirmed on Wednesday, with 30 “Celestia” train sets being acquired, along with an option for 20 additional units.

Details of the New Double-Decker Trains

Each Celestia train will measure 200 meters in length. When two of these trains are coupled together, they will form a formidable 400-meter service capable of accommodating approximately 1,080 passengers. This milestone marks the introduction of the first double-decker high-speed trains to operate through the Channel Tunnel.

Significance of the Purchase

Eurostar’s chief executive, Gwendoline Cazenave, expressed her pride in introducing double-decker trains to the UK, highlighting the exceptional comfort they are expected to provide. Notably, the only previous instance of double-decker trains on British railways was a 1949 experiment.

Growth and Expansion Plans

  • Eurostar transported 19.5 million passengers last year.
  • The company aims to increase this figure to 30 million in the coming years.
  • A new fleet of trains will enhance service frequency to London by 30%.
  • Expansion plans also include new routes to Geneva and Frankfurt from London.

This strategic move is poised to revitalize Eurostar’s offerings and improve operational efficiency, ensuring improved service for a growing passenger base.
