Maple Leafs: Should Power Play Strategy Be Overhauled?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing challenges with their power play strategy that may require an overhaul. Despite featuring high-profile scorers, the team has struggled to convert on man-advantage opportunities.

Power Play Performance Needs Improvement

Mitch Marner’s departure has significantly impacted the Maple Leafs’ power play. Historically, they ranked among the top three in efficiency over his tenure. However, in the current season, Toronto faces issues, evidenced by a net power-play percentage of zero.

  • Only two teams have had a less effective power play this season: the Maple Leafs and the rebuilding Philadelphia Flyers.
  • Toronto nearly began the post-Marner era without a power-play goal after ten opportunities.

The current power-play unit boasts several notable players: a former 69-goal scorer, a 47-goal scorer, and a 29-goal scoring defender. Yet, their efficiency remains puzzling. Team veteran Auston Matthews acknowledged a need for improvement, citing a lack of 5-on-5 scoring leading to fewer power-play opportunities.

Current Challenges and Potential Changes

As of the 2024-25 season, the Maple Leafs rank 20th in power-play opportunities, earning only 2.6 chances per game. This correlates with their overall offensive struggles. The team has not maintained puck possession effectively, limiting their shots and scoring opportunities.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson currently quarterbacks the second power-play unit. Given his experience, he might be a solution to replace Morgan Rielly if issues persist. The unit also lacks a creative passer, which complicates their ability to score on the power play.

Need for Strategic Adjustments

A significant rethink may be warranted to inject new life into the power play. Recent changes last winter saw a five-forward strategy that revitalized their performance. The current high-profile forwards need a reliable facilitator to maximize scoring potential.

The Maple Leafs must address their stagnant power play to regain their offensive aptitude. The upcoming games will be pivotal for determining if they can adapt their strategy or if a more substantial change is necessary to become a significant threat in the league.
