Latrobe Magnesium Gains EXIM Backing for Plant Expansion

Latrobe Magnesium Limited (LMG) has made significant strides in securing financial backing for its expansion efforts. The company received a Letter of Interest from the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM) for potential financing of up to A$200 million. This funding aims to support the construction of its Stage 2 Commercial Magnesium Plant.

Support for U.S. Supply Chain Resilience

The EXIM bank’s backing aligns with the United States’ goals to reinforce supply chain resilience and secure critical minerals. The initiative comes in response to the growing demand for local magnesium production, as LMG’s plant is set to produce 10,000 tonnes of magnesium annually for the U.S. market.

Project Overview

The planned plant will address the current gap in domestic magnesium production, which is predominantly influenced by foreign suppliers, particularly from China and Russia.

  • Annual Production Capacity: 10,000 tonnes of magnesium
  • Funding Sought: Up to A$200 million
  • Current Market Capitalization: A$70.25 million

Future Developments

Latrobe Magnesium is also securing funding for its demonstration plant and is collaborating with Bechtel to conduct a Bankable Feasibility Study. This study is crucial for the project’s long-term success and will help bolster LMG’s position in the global market.

Environmentally Friendly Practices

The company employs a patented extraction process to convert industrial ash—a byproduct of brown coal power generation—into magnesium metal and cementitious material. This method not only promotes recycling and a circular economy but also aims to minimize CO2 emissions associated with magnesium production.

Moreover, LMG has plans for a future “Mega” Plant in Malaysia that aims for an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes of magnesium, further enhancing its market presence.

Market Presence and Trading Insights

As of now, Latrobe Magnesium has an average trading volume of 3,669,337, although current technical sentiment suggests a “Sell” signal. These factors highlight the evolving landscape for LMG and its ambitious plans within the magnesium industry.
