Titans Clearly Express Views on Veteran’s Underperformance

The Tennessee Titans signed veteran wide receiver Tyler Lockett to a one-year deal before the 2025 NFL Draft, hoping he would provide valuable experience and offensive production. Unfortunately, Lockett’s performance has been disappointing. Over six games, he has only managed eight receptions for a mere 52 yards, with one or fewer catches in four of those games.

Underwhelming Performance of Tyler Lockett

Lockett was initially brought in to fill the role of a slot receiver in Brian Callahan’s 11-personnel offensive scheme. However, following Callahan’s dismissal earlier this week, Lockett’s role has diminished further. His playtime has sharply declined, illustrating the coaching staff’s dwindling confidence in his abilities.

Declining Snap Counts

The turning point for Lockett’s usage came in Week 5. His snap count fell from 36 to just 17 in one week. In that game, he was out-snapped by rookie receiver Chimere Dike, with Dike receiving 33 snaps compared to Lockett’s 17. This pattern continued in the disappointing Week 6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, where Lockett only played 20 snaps while Dike had 34.

Future Outlook for the Titans

  • The Titans, currently in a rebuilding phase under interim head coach Mike McCoy, will likely prioritize playing time for younger players like Dike.
  • With a record of 1-5, it may be prudent for the Titans to consider benching Lockett permanently.
  • The team is not financially committed to Lockett beyond this season, as he is on a one-year contract.
  • In the offseason, General Manager Mike Borgonzi and Assistant General Manager Chad Brinker will focus on enhancing the roster and developing quarterback Cam Ward.

The ongoing struggles of Tyler Lockett reflect a larger issue for the Titans. As the season progresses, the emphasis will now shift to nurturing emerging talent and making strategic decisions that benefit the long-term future of the team.
