Former Assassin’s Creed Leader Reveals Ubisoft Requested His Departure After 15 Years

Marc-Alexis Côté, the former head of the Assassin’s Creed franchise at Ubisoft, recently confirmed that his departure was not voluntary. In a LinkedIn post, he expressed no resentment but clarified that he did not resign after a notable 15-year career with the company.

Details of the Departure

Côté’s exit, announced earlier this week, surprised many, especially following the successful launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. According to a leaked internal email, Ubisoft explained that Vantage Studios, the new division managing the franchise, required a leadership team aligned with its objectives.

Ubisoft’s Decision and Côté’s Reaction

Côté noted that he was offered another role within Vantage Studios but chose to decline it. “I did not make that choice,” he stated. “Ubisoft decided to transfer the leadership of the Assassin’s Creed franchise to someone closer to its new organizational structure.”

Côté joined Ubisoft in 2005 and significantly impacted the Assassin’s Creed series from its early days with Brotherhood to titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. By March 2022, Côté was leading the franchise’s overall development, laying the groundwork for future projects, including the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe and a new multiplayer initiative.

The Future of Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft is set to appoint a new leader for the Assassin’s Creed franchise in the coming months. This transition occurs as the company prepares for a busy 2026, which includes expansions to Assassin’s Creed Shadows and a much-anticipated Black Flag remake.
