Ring Cameras to Strengthen Collaboration with Law Enforcement

Amazon’s Ring cameras will enhance collaboration with law enforcement through a new partnership. This initiative allows around 5,000 local agencies to request access to Ring camera footage using Flock Safety’s surveillance platforms.
Details of the Partnership
Law enforcement can now utilize Flock software to post inquiries directly in the Ring Neighbors app. These posts will inform community users about investigations and seek voluntary assistance.
- Requests must include:
- Specific location and timeframe of the incident
- A unique investigation code
- Details regarding the investigation
Community members can view these requests anonymously, ensuring a level of privacy. Any footage shared by Ring customers will be securely packaged by Flock and provided directly to the requesting law enforcement agency through FlockOS or Flock Nova.
Privacy Concerns Arise
This partnership has triggered renewed privacy concerns. Flock is also known for its license plate recognition technology, which has faced scrutiny in the past. Privacy advocates have raised alarms about the potential misuse of these technologies by law enforcement.
Community and Business Usage
Besides law enforcement, Flock’s services extend to 6,000 communities and 1,000 businesses. The company allows users to search footage using specific descriptors, such as clothing or physical features.
Political Reactions
U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) has expressed concerns regarding Flock’s collaboration with federal agencies. He recently wrote to Flock’s CEO, highlighting that agencies, including the Secret Service and U.S. Navy’s Criminal Investigative Service, have previously accessed footage from Flock’s systems.
As law enforcement prepares to access Ring Community Requests in the coming months, the balance between public safety and privacy continues to be a pressing debate.
